How guidez Onboards 5,000 New Users a Month with a Sendbound Sequence
guidez runs a 7-email onboarding sequence that activates users within the first 14 days. 68% open rate on day 1, 41% on day 7. Here's every email, every trigger, and every decision.
guidez is a user onboarding and in-app guide platform. The product helps SaaS companies build interactive product tours, tooltips, and onboarding checklists. The irony of their situation: as a company that helps other products onboard their users, guidez needed to be exceptional at onboarding their own users — and email was the backbone of that flow.
The 7-email sequence
guidez runs a 14-day onboarding sequence that fires based on user behavior, not just time. Day 1 sends a welcome email with the single most important action (creating your first guide). Days 3 and 5 send feature spotlight emails triggered only if the user hasn't already used that feature. Day 7 sends a "you're halfway through your trial" email. Days 10 and 12 send case study emails featuring customers in the same industry vertical as the new user. Day 14 is a trial expiration notice with a personal note from the team.
Behavior-triggered sends
The behavioral triggers are handled by guidez's backend, which listens to product events and calls the Sendbound API with the appropriate template. If a user installs the guidez snippet on day 2, the "install the snippet" email on day 3 is suppressed automatically — Sendbound's suppression list lets guidez pass a tag that prevents sending the template to users who have already completed the action. No database of "did this user get this email" to maintain.
"The behavior-based suppression logic alone saved us three weeks of engineering. We didn't have to build a state machine for "what has this user received." We just tag users in Sendbound and the API handles the rest."
Industry personalization
guidez segments new users into five verticals at signup: SaaS, e-commerce, fintech, healthcare, and other. The day 10 and day 12 case study emails pull from a library of 15 customer stories and select the two that best match the new user's vertical. Sendbound's template conditional blocks handle the selection logic in the template itself — no separate email sends per vertical, just one template with five sets of conditional content blocks.
